“Because you’re young, you’re torn between a world of hate and a world of dreams. So much to lose, so much to gain, so much to fight for, so much to change.”
Hello, I have returned from my short hiatus. This past week has been such an amazing experience and I’d like to share the journey that it has brought upon me. One single program has touched my life and presented me with a grand opportunity to return to the program as a staff member. The experiences I had during my time in the program is irreplaceable and I was blessed to be able to bring that experience to even more girls across the state of Indiana.
One year ago, in 2018, I had the opportunity to attend Hoosier Girls State as a delegate, made possible by the American Legion Auxiliary. However, with the roles flipped this year, I was able to get a whole new perspective on the impact that one week can make in a young woman’s life. On the last day, my girls asked me if I preferred being a delegate or counselor. While I wouldn’t trade my experience as a delegate for the world, being a counselor opened my eyes to why I was so passionate about this program.
During my year as a delegate, my life changed within a matter of one week. When I returned as a counselor, I found a special power in being able to change 26 other girls lives. 26 girls from all across the state and have never met a single person, soon created an unbreakable bond. Along the way, even though we were supposed to be the teachers, they taught me some valuable lessons.
My biggest goal in life is to make an impact, and I want to start with young women. Some of the brightest upcoming high school seniors that Indiana has to offer with so much untapped potential first came to me with a million dreams. I was in awe of these bright-eyed ambitious girls and with a little empowerment from myself and my fellow counselors, they left with the confidence to use their voice to be the change that they want to see. To be able to watch everyone’s progression and growth over the course of only one week is an indescribable feeling.
To any of my delegates that somehow stumbled across this post, thank you for opening my eyes to a new passion. You all are going to go far, this is only the beginning. No matter which road you choose to follow, I’m always going to have your back as will everyone else you have met during your time at HGS. Thank you for allowing me to give you the life-changing experience I was able to have, I hope I made an impact in all of you in some way. You will always have a special place in my heart.
Until next year Hoosier Girls State
